Search Engine Optimisation
The ultimate aim for every website owner is to have their site appear first in Google's results, when people search for certain words. Google is, after all, the world's most popular search engine.
For example, the owner of a clothing shop will probably want their website to appear first in the results when internet users search Google for the word "clothes".
The problem with this is that every single company in the world that has a website selling clothes, will also want their site to appear first. Only one of these companies can win, and the process becomes an auction: who is prepared to pay the most, and do the most work, to be top? And the bidders are every single English-speaking company in the world that has a similar line of business to that of the customer.
There are a number of companies out there who promise to put customers' websites at the top of search engine results. These companies are guilty of misleading their customers as there is no way of guaranteeing this.
The fundamental question facing every business is this: "how many other companies in the world want to be top in Google for the keywords I have selected?" The business must be willing to compete with all of these other companies, in order to achieve its goal.
Even large multi-national companies like IBM, Microsoft etc. must compete. Microsoft is the world's largest supplier of software, but it doesn't have the top ranking on Google for the word "software".
For this reason, internet companies that promise a "top 10" ranking on Google, are guilty of misleading their potential customers. Such a result can never be guaranteed; you can only strive for that goal, and offer customers a refund if it is not achieved.
